Vitamin C has been buzzing in the beauty industry for the past few years, and here’s why. The natural ingredient is an antioxidant with the ability to brighten skin, neutralise free radicals and fade pigmentation. So it’s no surprise beauty scientists thought it could benefit us by incorporating vitamin C serums, creams or targeted treatments into our daily routines.
Who should try vitamin C?
Almost anyone can use vitamin C as skincare. However, those with sensitive skin and fragile skin barriers should be careful because of skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, rosacea and dry skin, as these can be potentially problematic. If you’re unsure, we recommend you try a patch test first. Most topical treatments can be very acidic and cause flare-ups of acne and eczema.
Choosing the right product
Vitamin C isn’t the easiest ingredient for the skin to absorb. It’s water-soluble and therefore repelled by our waterproof skin barrier.
When shopping for a vitamin c product you’ll see that many brands have found ways to side-step the vitamin’s stability and absorption issues using innovative formulations and advanced packaging. That’s why sometimes you’ll see a vitamin c moisturizer range between $65 – $166. Our conditioning body wash contains a mix of essential oils and vitamins – including vitamin C – and for only $22.
Look for products in airtight, opaque packaging and containing ascorbic acid (often referred to as L-ascorbic acid), which is the term for the chemically active form of vitamin C.
