Imagine waking up every morning to lashes that looked like they’d been through a few curler clamps and coated with a hit of mascara…all before you put any makeup on. Not only is it possible, but the reality is as magical as it sounds. We’re talking about lash lifts and tints, the hour-and-change treatment that yields “do-nothing, still-look-great” results.
What is a lash lift?
One way to think of a lash lift is like a perm for your eyelashes. Unlike a lash extension, a lash lift simply alters the shape and color of your natural lashes.
With a keratin lash lift, more protein is added back into the lash. In a non-keratin lash lift, “the lashes are rolled upwards and set in place using the same type of chemicals that are used in traditional hair perms,” Carol Pires, Owner of Glaminator Beauty Bar, explains. The treatment involves boosting and lifting each individual lash, before tinting them for thicker, darker, longer looking lashes.
What happens during a lash lift?
When you walk into your first lash lift, you can expect to lie down on a bed (like the kind you’d get a wax on). But, unlike a wax, you won’t actually be able to see anything, or use your eyes (and therefore, phone) for the duration of your appointment.
The appointment itself boils down to three key steps. First, silicone pads are placed on the (closed) eyelids. Your lashes are then lifted and a serum is applied to them. This first serum is used to break down the protein in the lashes. The lashes are molded onto the shield, so it breaks down the lash to take shape. Next, a keratin-infused fixing serum is applied, which, begins the process of restoring the lashes and conditioning them. The tint is applied and the silicone pads are removed. Finally, a coat of pure keratin is applied to the lashes, which provides an extra layer of protein to strengthen and condition.
Will a lash lift damage your lashes?
Lash lifts will not damage your lashes if done properly. Getting your lashes lifted usually motivates you to grow longer lashes and take better care of them naturally. I tell my clients to hydrate their lashes after a lift with coconut oil.
How long will the results last?
Results of a lash lift and tint last about six to eight weeks.
How do you maintain a lash lift?
The first 48 hours after a lash lift are the most crucial to maintaining those gorgeous results, and it’s required that you avoid water (and mascara), heavy exercising (or anything that would make you sweat a lot), or showering—at least in any way that will expose your lashes to the water. After 48 hours, we recommend brushing the lashes out every morning and evening before applying a lash serum.
Can you use mascara on top of your lash lift?
Yes, but never waterproof formulas. Waterproof mascara dehydrates the lashes in order to stay on, which causes breakage to the lash.
Are lash lifts safe?
In short, yes. When performed properly, the procedure is relatively safe, nothing that risks include potential skin irritation or allergies to the eyepatches or chemicals used in the process. If the perming chemicals are on the lashes for too long, they can lead to breakage or lash damage, and occasionally, with tints, the dye used can lead to allergies or direct irritation if they come in contact with the skin. As a customer, make sure to look at a professional’s reviews, before-and-afters, or ask a trusted friend for a recommendation.
