What Is a Bridal Makeup Trial and Why Is It Non-Negotiable?
A bridal trial is a full-length, full-detail practice run of your wedding day hair and makeup. It takes as long as the wedding day service will take — typically 60 to 90 minutes for makeup, 60 to 90 minutes for hair — and results in a complete look that you photograph, evaluate, and give feedback on. Based on that feedback, we refine the look before your wedding day.
Some brides skip the trial to save money. We gently but firmly advise against this. Your wedding day makeup is the one look in your life where you don’t get a do-over if something is off. A trial is the investment that removes all uncertainty from one of the most photographed days of your life. When to Schedule Your Trial
The ideal timing for your bridal trial is 4 to 8 weeks before your wedding. This window gives you enough time to make changes if needed and book a second trial if you want to, without being so far in advance that your skin or hair conditions change significantly. We don’t recommend scheduling your trial more than 10 weeks out, as seasonal skin changes can affect how products wear.
Try to schedule your trial on a day when you have an evening event or dinner — an engagement party, rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, or even just dinner with your partner. Wearing the look for a full day or evening gives you invaluable information about how it holds, how it photographs, and how you feel in it.
What to Bring to Your Bridal Trial at Glaminator
- Inspiration photos — a collection of hair and makeup looks you love, even if they’re different styles. Pinterest boards, Instagram saves, magazine tears — anything that communicates your vision.
- Photos of your dress, or wear it to the trial if possible. The dress changes everything: a strapless gown calls for a different neckline and shoulder aesthetic than a high-neck lace gown.
- Your hair accessories — veil, headpiece, flowers, pins — if you have them. We need to style your hair with whatever will be in it on the day.
- Come with clean, moisturized skin. No heavy makeup. Hair clean, blow-dried if possible, and unstyled.
- An honest, open mindset. If something isn’t right, tell us. That’s what the trial is for.

At Glaminator, Carol Pires personally oversees every bridal consultation and works directly on the majority of our brides. Carol begins every trial with a conversation — not just about the look, but about you. How do you normally wear your makeup? Do you want to look like yourself, just elevated? Or are you open to a more dramatic transformation? What does your venue look like? Indoor or outdoor? Evening or afternoon? These details inform every decision that follows.
From there, Carol builds the look methodically, explaining each step and checking in with you throughout. When the full look is complete, she photographs it under multiple lighting conditions and walks you through any adjustments you’d like to make. You leave the trial knowing exactly what to expect on your wedding day.
Airbrush vs. Traditional Makeup for Brides
One of the questions we’re asked most often is whether to choose airbrush or traditional application for wedding day makeup. Carol’s take: airbrush is generally the better choice for NJ weddings, particularly in the warmer months, because it wears longer, photographs seamlessly, and holds up to humidity, tears, and the physical demands of a 10+ hour day. Traditional application is perfect for brides who prefer a softer, more natural finish or who have skin concerns that respond better to hand application. We discuss both options at every trial and will recommend the approach that best suits your skin and vision.

A: We recommend doing both together in a single trial appointment. Seeing hair and makeup together is essential — a look that seemed right with hair down might change completely once the updo goes in, and vice versa.
