It’s applied in a thin layer over the skin, a cloth or paper strip is pressed on top, and then the strip is removed quickly, pulling the wax and hair with it. Soft wax is fast, efficient, and effective at removing hair.
The drawback is adhesion. Soft wax is designed to stick to whatever it touches — and that includes the skin itself. When the strip is removed, it takes the hair and the top layer of dead skin cells with it. On sensitive areas, repeated passes, or delicate skin, this can cause redness, irritation, micro-tears, and significant discomfort.
What Is Hard Wax and Why Is It Different?
Hard wax is applied more thickly and allowed to cool and harden slightly before removal — no cloth strip is required. As it hardens, it shrinks around the hair shaft rather than bonding to the skin surface. When removed, it pulls the hair without gripping the skin. This fundamental difference in adhesion is what makes hard wax significantly more comfortable, especially on sensitive areas like the face, underarms, and bikini zone.
